Rock Story (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Rock Story (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Original music from the Motion Picture Rock Story.

Many people feel old when they turn 30, but that didn't affect me. It was turning 28, that really rang in my head. Suddenly, I was older than half my music idols. Hendrix, Joplin, Cobain. At the height of their careers, they were all kids compared to me now. Even though, in their photos, they still looked older and still larger than life. I realized it was too late for me to become an international music sensation. It was too late to let my fame and addictions spin wildly out of control. I would never get the chance to hate my fans. I wouldn't die immortal. If only my stupid drummer could have remembered his parts, I would have had it all. But I moved on and went into an easier field - directing movies.

But there's something about playing music and having an audience utterly enthralled with every note, that's intoxicating.
It makes ugly people irresistibly sexy, turns normal people into raging egomaniacs and unstoppable hedonists, and once someone gets a taste of it in their own life, it's nearly impossible to let it go. So when Ken Del Vecchio told me about the screenplay he was writing with Mandy Bruno and Robert Bogue, I wanted in. The idea that these characters are willing to give up so much to chase the thrill of being a hit musician, and the dark mystery around why it went so wrong in the past, is something that they invented for the movie, but could easily be real. It was a story that relates to everyone who's ever sung in the shower. But there was only one problem: now we needed 15 amazing new rock songs.

On top of co-writing and starring in the movie, Mandy was also the music supervisor and often a songwriter as well. She and Chris Gullace (May Day Rising) crafted many of the core songs, that tell the story of the movie. I think just by listening to the songs, you can tell it's more than just a collection of catchy tunes, it's an arc of several characters. There were many other incredible contributions to the music in the movie that is now this album. It was a group effort. Eric Etebari, Sean McNabb, Stephen Grove and Keaton Simons are just a few of the amazing songwriter/performers that you'll hear. And d. Smith, Lou Gonzalez, Denis Kimak, Andy Guase, B.J. Quinn, and Bob Dimond were invaluable behind the scenes with the recording and instrumentation as well.

There's immeasurable passion, talent and armpit-sweat in every track here. And the song that really stands out to me as the most representative of the movie is "Bonnie & Clyde." I feel it deserves to be an anthem heard across the world. The song takes a familiar history/folk-legend, and relates it to the story in the film. And harks to society's strange love/hate relationship with danger and murder. Naturally, you have to watch the whole movie to get to it, and by the end of the film, I think you'll understand what I'm talking about.

Special thanks to my grandfather, Pop Pop, who drove me around for countless hours as a kid in his red Mercedes, roof top open, educating me on the importance of Rock n' Roll. This one's for you.
