Busted

Busted

by Stewart MasonMan, by this point, Cheap Trick couldn't even sell out correctly! 1988's Lap of Luxury had spawned a couple of hit singles, and a modicum of craft and shameless pandering could have kept the gravy train rolling at least a little while longer. Instead, the group hit the concert trail for an extended period of time and then ran back into the studio before they had written any halfway decent material, and unfortunately, Busted sounds like what it is: a rushed, half-baked follow-up to a surprise hit that does the band no favors. Even the obligatory Diane Warren-penned power ballad, "Wherever Would I Be," is completely horrid, and that's by the low standards of Diane Warren-penned power ballads! (To his credit, Robin Zander sounds like he's cringing throughout the entire song.) The band does manage to rouse themselves a little at the very end, for a credible run-through of their hero Roy Wood's "Rock and Roll Tonight," but it's too little too late. Busted has some competition for the title, but it's a strong contender for the coveted title of Cheap Trick's career nadir.
