Willie Boo Boo “The Fool”
Evidently aiming for similar territory to that of J Dilla’s ‘Donuts’ or Madlib’s Beat Konducta, DJ/producer K-Def’s Willie Boo Boo project is pure instrumental hip-hop – delivered straight from the bubbling beat source. Clocking in at just over an hour and without a single larynx in view, Willie Boo Boo is a hip-hop womble; managing to be both underground and over ground at the same time, without losing any charm of the former or bite of the latter. Having produced in the past for the likes of ODB, Ghostface Killah, The Artifacts and Marley Marl, K-Def certainly knows his hip-hop onions – a knowledge he brings to bear throughout ‘Willie Boo Boo The Fool’. Never raising the BPM above that of his heartbeat, the music on here is blunted to the tip and all the better for it – with the vinyl leaking the kind of instrumental vibes that are such a sought after commodity. With particular highlights including the soul-sampling ‘Under The Moon’, ‘The Godfather’ and its dusty predilection, plus the zinging beats of ‘Action Theme’, Willie Boo Boo The Fool is hop-hot-to-trot. Smarter than the average bear…
