A Little Bit Sane

A Little Bit Sane

Ponder is the musical voice of actor/songwriter Amos Glick. A veteran San Francisco, Bay Area performer, (SF Mime Troupe, Pickle Family Circus , BATS Improv, etc.) Glick currently performs as a clown in Le Rêve, the acclaimed circus/water spectacle at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. Though this is Ponder's debut CD, A Little Bit Sane contains an eclectic collection of tunes written over a 25 year period. The songs span a variety of styles (Pop/Reggae, Rock, Folk & Americana) and represent the musings of a Bay Area seeker trying to make sense of our fragile existence.

Glick's thoughtful, witty lyrics are supported by memorable melodies that, while clearly influenced by the likes of John Prine, Phish, The Band & The Grateful Dead, make an undeniably original statement. This is due, in large part, to Glick's unadorned vocal style, lending the songs an "everyman," quality: a heartfelt honesty rare in pop music today.

The CD opens with Sweet Confused, a lilting, reggae-infused groove that honors the inherent confusion of being human, whimsically proposing that, "maybe we should stop trying so hard to figure it out." Got To Be A Way and Minstrel Caravan are direct homages to the Grateful Dead; the former in terms of melody and feel, the latter paying tribute to the unique counter culture spawned by the iconic band. Homegrown is a lively drinking song for potheads, an "instant classic" novelty song in the tradition of The Toy's "Smoke Two Joints." The remaining tunes, Our Kisses Are Waltzes (an achingly sweet and intimate acoustic waltz,) Overrated (an "inadequate" rock-ballad,) Old Country (Jewish-gospel identity crisis) & Epilogue (akin to an acoustic, instrumental after-diner mint) round out the CD with a satisfying mix of folk, pop and rock.

Co-produced by critically acclaimed songwriter Ira Marlowe, A Little Bit Sane, features an all Bay Area band comprised of Marlowe, Joshua Raoul Brody (Clubfoot Orchestra,Tango No. 9, The Residents, Tom Waits, etc.) Charity Kahn (known for her children's music: Charity Kahn & The JAMband,) fellow Mime Troupers Velina Brown and Lisa Hori-Garcia and others.

"a nicely varied collection, each track with a flavor and atmosphere all its own. Glick avoids the tropes so grievously overused by so many songwriters, and comes across sounding like what he is: a thoughtful, peace-lovin' Jewish leftist hippie pothead clown. In short, my kind of guy. "Minstrel Caravan" could be about Grateful Dead Tour, or the Chautauqua; "Homegrown" is the rant of a garrulous d**e grower; "Sweet Confused" and "Got to Be a Way" look at confusing contemporary days from different angles; in "Overrated" and "Old Country," he looks at himself from different angles; and the first of these songs to earn a slot in rotation on my Brain Radio, "Our Kisses Are Waltzes," is a perfect evocation of that sweet ache at the beginning of a love."
David Gans, Grateful Dead Hour

“This new EP from Ponder (Amos Glick with help from Ira Marlowe) is a warm reminder that originality, sincerity, humor and excellent musicianship didn’t go out of style with the rise of the manufactured corporate pop icon.”

"there's much here to be enjoyed. Positively retro in its presentation, "A Little Bit Sane" sounds like it was recorded in early '70s San Francisco; it wears its hippy heritage on its sleeve, and it's bands like Phish and Grateful Dead that have undoubtedly provided the most inspiration. Standout tunes like "Sweet Confused" and "Got To Be A Way" transport the listener back to another time and place, and although it all sounds a little lo-fi, there's enough enthusiasm and simple charm on display to blow away any audio cobwebs."
