What You Can Do, What You Can't (Explicit)

"Greetings, musically enlightened rude bwoys 'n' gals. The musically riddimwise selections you are presently experiencing, although brought to you by perhaps the planet's most fiercely devoted ska label, tend to take the scenic route around the path narrowly defined nowadays as "ska." Skinnerbox understand the simple fact that, back inna days, being a true rude boy meant liking Otis Redding and Big Youth as well as Toots and Desmond Dekker. Thus, this album is more deeply soul-and-skank-laden than many young bands can even conceive of, especially if they've got MTV dreams on the brain. Seen? These are tunes that feel right, like you've heard them forever but can't quite remember exactly where or when. And make no mistake, children--this is the way it was always supposed to be done, from the start. Pick up a Skatalites LP--alongside the ska, there's a jazz tune, a Latin jam, even show tunes. Anything to further stimulate the act of creation. On this album, only a handful of tracks feature the stereotypical herky-jerky ska sound, the band opting instead to treat ska as a guiding principle rather than a binding, restrictive sub-format. So fire up a huge spliff, kick back with a loved one, or do whatever it is you do when the music hit ya and ya feel no pain."--Greg Casseus

"Skinnerbox turns in a rabidly eclectic ska album, leaping from straight-ahead 2-Tone to fusions of ska with punk, jazz, R&B, you name it...Skinnerbox's willingness to experiment certainly makes them more interesting than many of their late-'90s third-wave contemporaries."--Steve Huey, AllMusic.com

"Skinnerbox blends ska, reggae, soul, punk, and jazz to create a heavy arsenal of dance rhythms...this album will take you by storm and your feet won't stop! I can't say enough good things about this disc."--Alex Steininger, InMusicWeTrust.com

"You have no idea how good this is. If you be down, with a face so long it takes an hour to shave, this will bring you right up. It's that good."--Amazon customer review
