ANDREA BALESTRA: PAINTING ON SILENCE (Spleen Records 2013) PRESS RELEASE
Painting on Silence is an all instrumental solo record by guitarist Andrea Balestra. It features nine songs: two rearranged covers and seven original compositions. On this record Balestra is accompanied by an extraordinary rhythm section that consists of bassist Matias Alvear Fall and drummer Dario Benzoni.
The album was recorded during four sessions at Dave Hill's home studio in North Hollywood, during which a few guests sat in with the trio. World renowned session man and guitarist for Supertramp Carl Verheyen plays on the funky Beatles cover of Come Together, jazz guitar legend John Pisano (Joe Pass, Benny Goodman, Sergio Mendes, Herp Albert to name a few of his credits) sits in on the title track, Scott Henderson (Tribal Tech, Chick Corea, Zawinul Syndicate) jams on the hard-grooving Bulldozer, fusion guitarist extraordinare Dave Hill plays on Anubis and country guitar god Steve Trovato plays on a haunting, bluesy version of Monk's Round Midnight. Even Balestra's former teacher from Berklee Julien Kasper collaborated long distance from Boston by sending his overdubbed tracks on the ballad Dark White Skies, that features a two part counterpunctual melody as well as unexpected improvisational free form sections that truly represent the spirit of this record.
