The Ensemble Resonanz is one of Europe’s leading chamber orchestras. Their previous collaboration with composer and multi-instrumentalist Elliott Sharp was a commission by the renowned Witten Festival for Proof Of Erdös, a 20-minute work for 12 string players that featured cutting-edge extended techniques and stunning sonics and received critical acclaim. Cut to 2016 and the Ensemble commissioned Sharp for a new work that would be a concerto for two soloists, in this case the virtuoso English bass-clarinetist Gareth Davis and Sharp himself on electro-acoustic guitar. Oceanus Procellarum means “sea of storms” and the title is appropriate given the waves of sound produced by the all-acoustic string ensemble and the soloists. The 38-minute through-composed work is in five movements and the sounds range from tranquil pools to tsunamis of harmonically tuned noise. Oceanus Procellarum premiered at the Greatest Hits festival at the Kampnagel in Hamburg, Germany and then went on to be performed a few days later
