Six of One and Half a Dozen of the Other
Tim Jones is a solo artist (guitar and vocals) who writes catchy music but with depth, caustically strong on irony and metaphor, melodic with accomplished harmonic structure. His history started in punky power pop and moddish bands in the late seventies in London, through a darker period, initially as a bass player and then as guitarist/singer. His songwriting began to flourish in the nineties and early 00s as singer/guitarist of the London band 'flicker' (with drummer Mike Bergquist, bass player Graham Smith and guitarist/keyboardist Larry Barker) but they sadly disbanded when Tim left for Australia. The newly released 12 song album, entitled 'Six of One and Half a Dozen of the Other' gives a nod to the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties and the modern era. The twelve songs start with 'Accident' which acts as an overture to the whole album: a masterfully written , amusing and cautionary 'life story'. The tapestry woven by the remaining eleven tracks reflects the diversity and experience of a lifetime in a series of contrasting songs, running through various states of guilt, unconditional love, recklessness, political awakening, optimism and despair. This is still 'pop music', though, and each and every track is powerfully capable of standing alone: full of hook lines, textures, metaphor and melody, backed by a high level of musicianship and harmonic structure.
