Story of My Life
Released in 2011, this CD is the culmination of 8 years of work, and many months and years of despair and doubt about whether this project would ever be completed or even should ever be completed.
Splintered's lead guitarist, Dru Kepple, was called to a church in Oregon, leaving the band with an impossible void to fill. Dru was clearly the driving force behind the arrangements and alternative rock sound of Splintered's 2002 release, "The Right Track." Dru was replaced by Richard Dutzman, who brought a more classic rock sound to the band, so a new CD project was begun to reflect the new sound. Unfortunately, Richard died in 2003 before the project could be completed, leaving the band deflated. Several other guitarists attempted to fill the lead guitarist slot over the years, but the band was never able to recapture the success we had with Dru and Richard.
Therefore, the CD project suffered through many starts and stalls, was recorded on three different recording devices, with over 11 musicians playing for Splintered over the intervening years. Many of these musicians appeared on one or more songs that were recorded (one of the musicians is featured only one time: one note on one song that just had to be kept in the recording). 20 different songs were recorded for this project, but none of them seemed to communicate a clear perspective, sounding more like a collection of several bands on a compilation CD. The project lost focus and continuity due to the turnover and due to the various talents and styles of the many musicians. There seemed as though there was no way to make a consistent and cohesive CD, so the project sat for many years.
Finally, it was the memory of Richard that drove David Jones back into the studio. He was able to recover two of Richard's solos and create two songs around them (Wedding Day and Jesus Loves You). From that point, the vision became clear: this was to be a CD about love, loss, and restoration in both the earthly and heavenly realms. It is, indeed, the story of David Jones' life.
As much as David loved Splintered, it became clear that to communicate the vision he intended for the CD, Splintered could no longer be a collaborative partner. It was, with great regret, that Splintered was disbanded, and David continued the project as a solo CD. As much of Splintered's recordings as possible were saved, but much had to be re-recorded in order to create the consistent vision necessary for this CD.
David would like to thank all of the former members of Splintered. The years spent together were fantastic, and their contributions to the CD are appreciated. David also hopes that they will forgive him for the drastic changes in style and the re-arrangements done to the music to create this CD. He is aware that many of them were proud of the work done on this project over the years and that many may be disappointed that their efforts were trimmed or cut completely. However, it is David's hope that this CD will honor the memory of the one to whom it is dedicated: Richard Dutzman.
