The “American Idol” contestant is performing in venues all over the area to get the word out about his debut album, which contains ballads, blues and cover songs.
Born and raised in Porter, Jason Head, better known by his middle name, Sundance, has tried to follow in the footsteps of his father, Roy Head, who was also a well-known singer.
After leaving his job and family to compete in “American Idol,” Sundance made it to the top 13 before being voted off. Even though he did not win, he was the first contestant to score a record deal without reaching the top 12 spot.
Sundance first signed on to Universal Motown Records with another “American Idol” contestant, Sabrina Sloan, in 2007 but said that he decided he wanted to go out on his own and break away from Motown. The album that was cut with Motown was never released,
“American Idol” was not the first time Sundance had performed in front of an audience; his band, Temper Scarlet, that he formed while at New Caney High School had a CD called “Crayon King.” After high school, Sundance said the band took off to Los Angeles to try the music scene there, but he stayed behind.
“I figured I had a better shot of staying in Texas to further my music career. Besides, I love Texas; other states are nice to visit but I can’t imagine living anywhere else,” said Sundance.
Sundance said he is not looking to be a rock star; he just wants music to be his career.
“If I can play my songs and let the audience hear what I have written and it relates to them and makes them happy – well then that would be an achievement in my career,” he said.
Sundance also admits it would be nice to have a Gold Record just like his dad did in 1965 for his song “Treat Her Right.” Currently his dad’s Gold Record hangs in the hallway for Sundance to pass and dream about his own one day.
“I’ve always passed it and thought one day mine would be right next to his and it still could be. My main goal though is to just get my music out to people whether it’s radio or Internet and have them enjoy it as much as I enjoy writing it,” said Sundance.

Everything I've written is from my life expierences not some words that sounded and looked good on paper. I feel if I can get through to my audience with my songs that are filled with love, pain, addiction, and happiness and it helps them and relates then I've done my job. My influences growing up were well first my dad Roy Head, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughn and U2 but many other artists had major influences to name a few Ray Charles, Etta James, Ottis Redding, all the classics!
