Blues for Dad

Blues for Dad

I have listened to the album “Blues For Dad”… and have been enjoying every minute of it… I am so happy to hear Dmitri Kolesnik in this setting, as his sound is warm and big, and his choice of notes is truly inspirational. His playing continues to grow and make his presence on New York jazz scene necessary. His compositions also merit close attention. This is a wonderful recording! RON CARTER

One can see why (Ron) Carter, who contributes a liner-note to the debut album, would enjoy Kolesnik’s sound, big and warm, with an impressively intelligent approach to the note-choice. Given that, it’s no surprise that he should also be an impressive composer. Everything except Kondakov’s “New York Wind”, a long blowing piece, is credited to the bassist, but what’s nice is how well he tailors his line to the talents of the band. “Blues For Dad” is terrific and the autobiographical thread continues with “Home”, “Waltz For B.E.” (Bill Evans we’d guess) and “White Nights, Gray Days”. It’s a record full of plangent nostalgi
