“When you pick the jazz musician of any period [...] you may be sure he always reflects what's happening in his time.”

Of course this Duke Ellington’s aphorism refers to talented musicians. These are times of retreat, and shortage of new musical ideas that is often masked by the uncritical accumulation of old musical material. Times of cheap neo-bop revivals and mixtures of genres. But also times when many musicians are developing a possible future for music, by working secretly in the background. Their poetic world is far from the prevailing and obsessive modern minimalism, our times’ banality. The question is not about inventing a new jazz. In 1964 Giorgio Gaslini already formulated the theory of total music, and Duke Ellington himself claimed that after 1943 he did not feel the need of restrictive categories. He wrote: "Jazz is only a word and really has no meaning".
Alessandro Sgobbio and Emiliano Vernizzi are two young performers who represent those ideas. They took on this artistic journey looking for their narrative emblem. The first part recalls sax/piano jazz improvisations from the African-American culture, from European musicians such as Bobo Stenson, and from classical music. Moreover, these two young musicians carry the tradition of the Protestant valleys of Piedmont, (La rentrée, Le premier, Temantico).
As the pianist and writer Claudio Cojaniz claims: "All art is about remembering .... it is the memory of the impossible, between a highly hypothetical past and future."

From such a horizon, unstable and perhaps unreal, Sgobbio’s and Vernizzi’s lights and shadows dance vividly, restlessly, and with elegance. Lights and shadows from a past that is a flamboyant as a long Summer sunset, or as a dawn that softly announces a day still far away.

“Se considerate un musicista di jazz di qualsiasi periodo, ….potete esser certi che egli riflette sempre quello che sta succedendo nel suo tempo.”

E’ di Duke Ellington questo aforisma e si riferisce ovviamente ai musicisti di talento. Questi che viviamo sono tempi di ripiegamento, tempi in cui la penuria d’idee musicali nuove è mascherata da molti con l’ accumulo acritico di materiali vecchi. Tempi di facili revival neo bop, di artefatte commistioni di generi. Ma anche tempi in cui molti musicisti lavorano in disparte, e purtroppo quasi clandestinamente, all’elaborazione di una possibile musica del futuro. O quanto meno, a raccontare un loro mondo poetico non omologato all’imperante ed ossessivo minimalismo, alla banalità dei nostri giorni. Non è questione di inventare un nuovo jazz. Già nel 1964 Giorgio Gaslini aveva teorizzato la musica totale e lo stesso Duke Ellington sosteneva che non sentiva più, fin dal 1943, la necessità di utilizzare categorie ristrette e limitanti. “Jazz – scriveva- è soltanto una parola e in realtà non ha significato”.

Alessandro Sgobbio ed Emiliano Vernizzi sono due giovani interpreti che si muovono in questo ambito. Hanno intrapreso questo loro viaggio artistico alla ricerca di una loro cifra narrativa. La loro prima tappa si snoda lungo le memorie inesauribili del sassofonismo jazzistico e di un’improvvisazione pianistica che è debitrice tanto alla cultura afro-americana quanto ai grandi musicisti europei come Bobo Stenson, oltre che all’immenso patrimonio della musica colta. Ma nel bagaglio dei due musicisti c’è anche la tradizione delle valli protestanti del Piemonte, molto cara al sentimento religioso di Alessandro. (La rentree, Le premier, Temantico).
In fondo, come sostiene il pianista e scrittore friulano Claudio Cojaniz “Tutta l’arte è ricordare….E’ la memoria dell’impossibile, tra un passato ed un futuro fortemente ipotetici “.

E’ su quest’orizzonte, instabile e forse improbabile, che le luci e le ombre di Sgobbio e Vernizzi danzano vivide, inquiete, eleganti. Luci ed ombre che vengono da un passato fiammeggiante come un lungo tramonto estivo; da un alba che annuncia indistintamente un giorno ancora lontano.
