Merry Humbug
Starting in 2001, Chicago’s resident guitar-and-dulcimer slinging smart aleck Sandy Andina teamed up with Mad Madisonian Stephen Lee Rich. Our originals are largely in the classic contemporary folk mode (think Steve Goodman, John Prine, Tom Paxton, Joni Mitchell after a few glasses of Rhine wine). We also cover tunes from such diverse sources as movie musicals, traditional songs and carols, show tunes, other contemporary folk, Americana and rock singer-songwriters, even the Great American Songbook. When it comes to humor and parody, no source escapes our deft skewering (a la the proud tradition ranging from Allan Sherman to Weird Al); when we get topical, we are always incisive and provocative; and occasionally, we hope we’ll tug at your heartstrings and not just hit your funny bone. We sing harmony and counterpoint, play acoustic guitars and mountain dulcimers (onstage we add harmonica and the odd---very odd--baritone uke and bass guitar); and enlist the instrumental studio support of some of the best pickers in the Midwest and Mid-South. We’re veterans of coffeehouses, clubs, concert series large and small and folk festivals, as well as live-in-studio radio appearances local and syndicated all over the Midwest, South, Northeast and Middle Atlantic (with occasional forays out west).
