After a grand prize win in the “American Song Festival” in Los Angeles, and another grand prize win in the “Music City Song Festival” in Nashville, Heroes was formed. Heroes is Dave Somboretz on guitar and vocals, Chris Madden on keyboards and vocals, Mike Sullivan on drums and vocals, and finally Rock Lancaster on bass and vocals.

The band was formed out of Cincinnati, Ohio...and these recordings were done at QCA Studios A&B, also in Cincinnati. Engineer credits, and production help go to Ric Probst. Additional musician notes include: Marcos Sastre on guitar, Eddie Erickson on sax, Michael Freeman on bass, Jerry Love on drums and vocals, Bob Wilson on vocals, and finally Joe Wieland on bells and vocals.

While the band’s sound, look, instrumentation, songs, and overall feel are obviously retro...a poll of several dozen people exposed no clear link to any other band’s style. Just when a song seems to be honing in on familiar territory like a Cars or ELO tune, an unexpected bridge pops up to remove the similarity. And when you feel a familiar pattern start to establish itself, a haunting Pink Floyd piece like “Helpless” starts to play. There are late 70’s influenced ballads, early 80’s up-tempo pop, Beatle like melodies and lyrics, and even 3 chord shuffles and a classical piano solo piece.

In the end, it’s fun...and a great stew of old school pop with simple messages and unexpected turns. In a world of quantized digital tracks, loop based rhythms, and Antares assisted vocals...this proves to be a refreshing and delightful time machine.
