Hey Now
The Nieu Bethesda dust still falls out of my telecaster from that Brothers gig on the back of a mielie trailer on the dust road in the heart of the karoo hamlet in South Africa. The Brothers got the crowd skanking for sure, even improvising an anti-fracking anthem for the picketing karoo crowd.
The Brothers hail from Port Elizabeth in South Africa: the windy, friendly city. Here they skank up a little storm with their band of reggae, funk and rock, infused with heady doses of improvisation - a unique genre known as skafrican. Conscious songs with catchy choruses are punctuated with flights of improvisational mayhem from saxophone, organ, guitar, tuba and vocals. And that is The Brothers, from getting the Splash Festival crowd on the beachfront singing “PE; The best place to be!” to jamming psychedelic solos at guerilla gigs at surfing contests for free, The Brothers are as Eastern Cape as Eastern Cape could be.
The Brothers have released the following albums:
"Road Trip" is a debut album, inspired by life on the South African road in an old Kombi camper. Elements of rock, reggae, acid jazz and folk are evident. Green energy, travel, love and life themes weave their way into the mix of guitars, saxophone, organ and vocals.
"Black and White" is a bit edgier than "Road Trip". A touch of hard rock underscored by a host of reggae and dub, with some afro and even a bit of Afrikaans thrown in.
And now, "Hey Now" which is a mix of reggae, ska, jazz, country, afro and funk – a genre blend we call "skafrican". Touching on environmental issues, morality, and the ocean addict's call to the sea, among other themes, The Brothers have created their 3rd full-length offering as a groove-infested wake-up cry. Laden with genuine hammond organ, brass section, three-part vocals, and, of course, drums, bass and guitars, the album was recorded over 15 months. The record is like a good curry, where the authentic ingredients have had time to stew in the mix, to put forth a unique flavour greater than the sum of its parts.
