Lenny Charles

Lenny Charles Guitars, Synth Guitar Guitarist Lenny Charles is one of the few accomplished guitarists who expresses himself using a synth guitar to try to play the phrasing of the instrument he is copying. The goal according to Lenny is to phrase not like a guitarist but like a harmonica, viola, piano, an orchestral string arranger or anything else that will add to the music. Studying first with N.J. guitar legend Harry Leahy Lenny then moved to southern California to join Discreet recording group ‘FlyBird’ and to study with chord master Ted Green. He then settled briefly in the mountains surrounding Boulder Colorado and played in a series of local bands. He soon returned to California to enroll in the 3rd class of G.I.T. soon to become Musicians Institute. Before graduating he designed and built the schools first electronic speed learning modules as well as teaching preparatory lessons to new students. After graduation he returned to Boulder where he met Kim Stone and formed the Stone Charles Band along with Aaron Stone and vocalist Dee Heinricks. At the same time he developed and patented one of the first viable midi synth guitars. His handiwork led him to meet and get a chance to play with George Benson, Alan Holdsworth, Pat Metheny, Steve Moorse, Larry Carlton, Robben Ford and the heads of most major music companies. Back in Boulder Lenny met Tony Black and with the help of Music aficionado Ken Goodwin enlisted Kim Stone shortly after his return from Spyro Gyro and together created the album ‘Speak in Tones’ released in 1989. The group premiered at the Winter Park Jazz Festival. The next few years were back and forth to New York where he played and roomed with jazz legend Jaco Pastorious. Returning to the New York area permanently in 1996 Lenny opened up a jingle and post sound production studio in Manhattan all the while playing in both NYC jazz and rock clubs. He has also appeared on television as a news anchor and political analyst. Most recently he got back together with Kim Stone and Tony Black added in Al Green veteran TBone on keys and produced ‘No Secrets Here’ naming the newly reformed ensemble ‘Puzzle Palace’.
