Backroom Buziness / Formula
Debuting just in time to move summer dancefloors around the world, Alex Niggemann, Superlounge and Marc Poppcke present their label: SOULFOOLED - a new platform designed to welcome music enthusiasts, artists, dancers and performers to their own distinctive brand of deep house music. With a mission to mix club oriented production style, a passionately independent label identity, and the emotive deepness of house, it's no surprise that artists like Till Von Sein, Chopstick and David Durango are already on board, as well as the gentlemen bringing you this first Soulfooled release: Audiofly and Dualton.
The double A side vinyl kicks off with "Backroom Buziness" by London/Barcelona transplants Audiofly. The duo has spent much of their time on remix projects and their upcoming album lately, but fans of their recent original productions will find much to love in this new 2010 offering. "Backroom Buziness" is a mellow but grooving track, with a touch of the pair's trademark experimentalism weaved throughout. Perfect for working the groove early on into a DJ set. Stuttering vocal samples and house synths stabs are accentuated with spacey samples and a silky dreamlike harp patch over a dark, rolling bass. This is Audiofly in top production form - "Backroom Buziness" is full of subtle elements that you will discover each time you play it!
Up next is "Formula" by Dualton. The guys enjoyed early success with "Formula" when the track was passed onto Germany's master of polyrhythmic architecture, Reboot. Not only did he chart the track, but he also featured it as a part of his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. What makes the track so special is the long and driving development of the music, which spans the genres of house, techno and jazz by combining traditional piano and drum sounds with classic synths and rhythm machines for a track that is truly visceral and hypnotic. The occasional cymbal smashes give the illusion of a big buildup around the corner, but instead of diving into the typical break, the entire rhythm just melts back down into deepness.
Rounding out the EP are two great remixes of both tracks, available as digital only exclusives. "Backroom Buziness" is remixed by Soulfooled label partners Superlounge, who offer a more stripped down and techy version of the track for those who would like a more straightforward taste of the original. Toronto's Sean Miller provides the remix for "Formula". Miller chooses to take the emphasis off the epic melodic buildup throughout the track, reigning it in and presenting it as a more subtle undertone and focusing more on the vocal and percussive elements of the original.
