Cannonball Fodder
Chicago based troubadour Terry White has released a collection of inspirational indie-folk songs titled Cannonball Fodder. Driven by his affection for blues, gospel, country, and rock, White has created musical travelogue. He explains, "In the late nineteenth century, listeners had but one way to share music, performing songs in neighboring towns and having your stories and melodies migrate from voice to voice and guitar to guitar. This is the pure essence of folk music. What I leave behind are these recordings and what people remember is the reflection. The reflection is what matters.”
Born out of keen sensibility, powered by passion, ripened by hard work, the album is a balance between gritty realism and poetic transcendence. His stories, including a gambler’s lament, a murderer’s premeditation and a godmother’s farewell, charm and captivate. His Americana-inflected songs “We Stand United” and “Yourself in History” adhere to the folk music tradition of social commentary. The revelations of outsiders in the earnest ballads, “Unintended Consequence” and “Nine of Clubs” suggest the low down characters of Tom Waits’ imagination. White shares these tales with an honest vocal style reminiscent of Rick Danko. This lyrical experience rests on the need to triumph over adversity, isolation and despair.
Cannonball Fodder is produced by Chicago legend Jon Langford and his stamp is evident in the unadorned production as well as the brilliant cover art. Langford came to Chicago via Leeds after creating the iconic English punk band the Mekons in the late 1970s. He has produced and played on recordings by the Old 97s, Kelly Hogan and Alejandro Escovedo, as well as his own band The Waco Brothers. The album features the talents of the band Cannonball: Terry White (vocals, guitars, harmonica); Paul Bivans (drums,); Andon Davis (guitars); Tom Kneesel (pedal steel) and Mike Krayniak (bass) and guest Chris Neville (keyboards).
Having shared the stage and studio with artists ranging from Joe Walsh and Billy Preston to Jane’s Addiction and Smashing Pumpkins, White currently performs throughout Chicago, Wisconsin and Minnesota. He will tour in support of the new release which falls on the heels of 2007’s Our Separate Ways. He is also a co-founder of Chicago based band Yellowhammers and wrote and co-produced their four releases.
