American Boy, is a playful, yet funky track produced by Christopher Troy (Troop, Cherrlle, Karyn). The piano playing the lead just sounds so right! When Chris played it for me, I knew it was hot and a departure from some of the smooth jazz tracks I had already produced for my HerStory CD. My roots are strong in R&B, so I was quite at home with the groove and feel of the song. I decided to call in my girls-some of the rhythm section from JaZz in P!nk (Robin Bramlett/bass, Benita Lewis/drums, Isha Love/keys & Kat Dyson/guitar). My daughter, Tamina Khyrah-joi Johnson and Wendy Brune-Smith laid out the backing vocals, and we had an awesome combination for the upcoming video-American Boy. So, instead of the love interest, I chose an American music student (Ade Agbalaya) to be the American Boy, that loves music, but doesn't always practice!
