Vicky Sampson is the magical voice behind “African Dream” - the song that inspired a nation and a continent when she sang it at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1996 African Cup of Nations Football Competition held in South Africa.
From her humble beginnings as a young girl growing up on South Africa's Cape Flats, Vicky has risen to international stardom, appearing in shows throughout the world with the likes of (take a deep breath) Shakatak, Al Jarreau, Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, Peabo Bryson, George Benson, Grace Jones, Randy Crawford, Maxi Priest, Kool & the Gang, and the Stylistics.
Vicky has released three albums: “Shine”, “Zai” and “License to Sing”, and is delighted to be back in the limelight with this new single.
Hiding in Public features the soulful singing and tasteful guitar work of Jamie Moses. Jamie has been hiding in plain sight for years as one of the UK’s top sidemen having toured with Queen + Paul Rodgers, Mike & the Mechanics, and most recently Tom Jones. When not standing on stage at events such as the Queen’s Jubilee or Nelson Mandela’s 46664 concerts, he is Hiding in Public with veteran London-based collaborators Kevin Poree, John Tonks and Cape Town based ace songwriter David Holland, whose awards include:
+ 1st Prize in the International Songwriting Competition (2008)
+ Finalist in the Brit Writers’ Awards (2011)
+ Finalist UK Songwriting Contest (2009 & 2011)
+ Grand Prize in the Broadjam/Steinberg Songwriting Competition (2012)
Producer Patrick Hickey is the godfather of South African hip hop and Cape Town’s master hit maker with countless singles over the years airing on South African radio stations. Blame him for putting this magic together!
“Finished” also features Matheson Bayley on strings and brass; and Cape Town’s Eugene Ackerman on bass.
