Mark Wyand

The saxophonist Mark Wyand is definitely one of the most exciting musicians of his generation in the German jazz scene. Born in Bishop Auckland, England in 1974, Mark grew up in Germany and received an extensive piano education and soon after, on the saxophone.\r \r When he was 18 years old, Mark attended, as a young scholar, the “Meistersinger Konservatorium” in Nürnberg and was a member of the national and federal jazz youth orchestra. After his Abitur, he switched from the conservatory Cologne to Würzburg and finally to the music university “Hanns Eisle” in Berlin, where he graduated as an awarded and honoured student. Among others, he learned from Leszeck Zadlo, Wolfgang Engstfeld and Jon Ruocco. Since then, Mark Wyand lives as a freelance saxophonist in Berlin. Furthermore, tours led him through Europe, the United States and South Africa. As an independent soloist and electric musician, he works with many diverse formations in jazz, pop and classical music and takes part in several CD, TV and Radio productions. So far, his concerts and recordings gave him the opportunities to perform with famous music personalities and ensembles: Kenny Wheeler, Jim McNeely, Clark Terry, Till Brnner, Robbie Williams, Klaus Doldinger, Gerard Presencer, Johannes Enders, the Summit Jazz Orchestra, the Radio Symphony Berlin and the Berlin Saxophone Orchestra ensemble. \r \r Between 1997 and 2000 Mark regularly visited Cape Town for longer terms, where he was getting inspired by concerts of Winston Mankuku, Basil Moses, Kevin Gibson or Jimmy Dlulu. 2004 Mark released his first own debut CD “Lucid Dream” (Mons Records) \r \r As a saxophone player and composer, Mark Wyand is following his own harmonic and melodic concept. In his music, transparency and deepness is combined in a very calm and meditative atmosphere. \r \r “Mark Wyand has width and infinity in the sonorous sound of his tenor saxophone. He also has a deep vein of romance as well, as you can see in the themes of his compositions.” (Rhein-Neckar Zeitung, 03/2005) \r \r After his album “Eye to Eye” (Sony BMG, May 2007, produced by Till Brnner), Sony BMG released Mark’s third album “Hidden Hill” in September 2008 (produced by Mark Wyand and Till Brnner).\r
