Kim Skovbye is a composer, songwriter and poet. Born in copenhagen in 1955, he grew up in a home frequented by artists. The Celtic harp is his main instrument, but as a true multiinstrumentalist he also knows how to handle the guitar, violin, bouzouki, mandoline, flutes, cello, dulcimer and keyboards. During the eighties, Kim made numerous trips to Ireland, Wales and Bretagne, the old Celtic countries. His meeting with the Celtic music has become a lasting inspiration for him. But he does not play Celtic music, the Celts are better at that. His music is born out of Scandinavian tradition, incorporating the light and the landscapes to give form and color to the music. In 1988, Kim was asked to contribute on several film projects, and this led to a close working relationship with another multi instrumentalist, Klaus Scønning. Two albums, Scandinavia and Heartland are the result of this cooperation. The combination of Kims fabled musical talents and Klaus Schønnings grand arrangements create a mythical atmosphere, that is probably without comparison in the world of music today. Their albums are musical landscapes stretching from the middle ages up till the visionary music of tomorrow. Other instrumental albums by Kim Skovbye were released during the following years: Aftermath, featuring amongst others singer Anisette of Savage Rose fame. And a year later, Wayfarer, music for two celtic harps. On this album Kim is accompanied by German harp player Gabrielle Reger. Eventide is another fine Celtic harp album from Scandinavias master harp player released by Fønix Musik. In 1997 Kim released the album There and back again, and as Tolkien lovers will know, this title is the subtitle of Tolkiens The Hobbit. The music describes the journey of Bilbo, the hobbit that reluctantly goes on a quest and proves himself able to overcome the obstacles facing him. The release of this album led to visits in Oxford, England where Kim played in concert at a festival of the Tolkien Society. He was also invited to a tea party in the garden of Priscilla Tolkien, daughter of J.R.R. Tolkien. In 2002 the album The Ring vol. 1 was released. The first in a series of two, this album is a musical companion for the first half of the Lord of the rings trilogy. For almost a decade, Kim has been working on music inspired by the world of J. R. R. Tolkien, and this album is a masterpiece of recreating, in music, the magic of Tolkien, as the whole world has come to love it. It was a great challenge to travel into the universe of Tolkien. To meet Gandalf, Bilbo, the Dwarfs and of course my fellow-men the Elves. To fight the Dragon, is beyond imagination. Now the World is an endless fight between good and evil, and in my life there has been many a Goblin to defeat. It seems that the brain is a mighty Warrior, and the mind is an endless battlefield. But to fight Dragons, we need the small people, the Hobbits, the Elves, the Fairies, to open doors, that is not visible to the eye. Some call it intuition, some call it fantasy, but I call it love, love is stronger than gold & diamonds, love is creation, it is life. But sometimes we need Wizards to remember.
